How to Remove a Radio From a Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander's stock stereo includes an AM/FM radio with built-in CD player. Highlander owners who wish to upgrade their stereo or replace a malfunctioning radio will need to first remove the factory radio from the dashboard stereo mounting dock. Take your Toyota to an aftermarket stereo retailer to have a technician remove your old unit, or do it yourself and save money.

• 10-mm socket wrench
• Trim panel removal tool
• Phillips-head screwdriver

     Pull the hood release lever under the Highlander's dashboard. Move to the front of the vehicle and lift the hood. Loosen the bolt on the negative battery cable's clamp with the wrench. Remove the cable from the negative terminal and set it beside the battery. Return to the inside of the Toyota.

     Place the trim panel tool removal's blade between the main dash panel and the trim panel surrounding the stereo and climate vents. Pry the panel from the dashboard and set it aside.

     Remove the three screws on either side of the Highlander's stereo bracket with the Phillips-head screwdriver.

     Slide the stereo assembly from the Toyota's dashboard stereo dock. Remove the three screws on the bracket to free the stereo from the housing. Slide the radio from the bracket.

     Unplug the stereo wiring connectors from the rear panel of the radio. Unplug the antenna cable from the back of the factory radio to complete the removal.
