Many people install a Sirius/XM satellite radio in the Prius.

The second-generation Toyota Prius has an integrated center console that features multiple vehicle and electrical functions. You can install an additional radio in your Prius by removing the dash panel that holds the in-dash radio in place. Sirius, XM or other satellite radios can be installed in the glove box, but the most frequently used space is the shelf beneath the in-dash radio in the center console of the Prius. In fact, some Sirius kits allow up to 16 lines of data to be seen on the multi-function display in the Prius dashboard.

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Satellite radio unit
  • Pliers
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • 10 mm drive sockets
  • Electrical insulation tape
  • Self-tapping screws
    • 1

Disconnect the negative lead from the Prius' 12-volt battery. Use a pair of pliers to loosen the screw that secures the terminal to the battery post.

    • 2

Remove the Prius' vent sections. The stock radio is held by a bracket attached to the console between these vent sections. Use a screwdriver and a 10 millimeter socket wrench to make the job easier.

    • 3

Release the vent sections that are at either side of the in-dash stereo. Loosen them from the top with a cloth-covered flat screwdriver, then pull the vent section forward with gentle but steady force.

    • 4

Remove the center console insert. Lift the rear portion and tilt it forward. Detach the front clip portion that holds the console in place.

    • 5

Lift the lever in the center console to release the console. Use both hands to lift out the top of the console panel.

    • 6

Unplug the three cables connected to the radio, then remove the four screws with the Phillips head screwdriver that hold the car radio to the bracket .

    • 7

Plug the satellite radio's cable into the extra connection port on the rear of the radio. Plug speaker wires into the wiring harness. Cover any bare wire connections with electrical tape.

    • 8

Attach the satellite radio unit into the console space beneath the stock Prius radio by drilling pilot holes underneath the shelf space. Use self-tapping screws with the Phillips head screwdriver to attach the satellite radio unit to the shelf.

    • 9

Reassemble the center console, reversing the steps used to remove it, and reattach the vent sections.

    • 10

Reattach the battery cable. Fit the connector over the negative battery terminal, and securely tighten the bolt with a pliers.

    • 11

Reset any electrical presets that were cleared by disconnecting the battery.
