How to Change Out a 2005 Toyota Corolla Fuel Pump

How to Change Out a 2005 Toyota Corolla Fuel Pump

The 2005 Toyota Corolla fuel pump has its fuel pump mounted in the fuel tank, much like many other vehicles. There are differences, however, in removing this pump compared to other models. It is possible to replace the pump itself rather than the entire module. The Corolla is also one of several foreign models where you don't have to remove the fuel tank. The pump is accessible from inside the car's rear compartment.

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Water pump pliers
  1. Removal

    • 1

Pull up on the rear seat cushion at each side to remove its clips and then pull the cushion out of the seat.

    • 2

Remove the four screws on the fuel pump access cover with your screwdriver and remove the cover.

    • 3

Disconnect the two electrical connectors on the fuel pump flange. Open the fuel tank cap on the side of the car and then crank the engine for up to four seconds, depressurizing the fuel system.

    • 4

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a wrench.

    • 5

Squeeze the quick-connect fitting on the fuel return line with needle-nose pliers to disconnect this line, then slide out the retaining clip on the fuel pressure hose to disconnect it from the flange.

    • 6

Unscrew and remove the retaining ring on the pump flange using a pair of water pump pliers, then lift the pump assembly out of the fuel tank.

    • 7

Pry off the clips on the pump's bottom plastic support using a screwdriver. Pull off the rubber isolator, the clip for the sock filter and then the electrical connector, then remove the pump from the housing.

    Installation

    • 1

Slide the new fuel pump into the assembly housing and then reconnect the electrical connector, filter and rubber isolator. Use a new filter if the old one is torn or dirty.

    • 2

Lower the reassembled fuel pump module into the fuel tank, making sure you don't damage the filter or the float. Reconnect the retaining ring.

    • 3

Reconnect the fuel lines and the electrical connectors on the fuel pump flange.

    • 4

Close the access cover to the fuel pump using the screws.

    • 5

Reinstall the rear seat cushion using its clips.

    • 6

Reconnect the battery cable. Put the fuel tank cap back on.
