Fix the check engine light on your Corolla.

You can fix the Check Engine light on your '06 Toyota Corolla yourself right at home. Sometimes a loose gas cap will cause the "Check Engine" light to illuminate on your instrument panel. If tightening the cap doesn't fix the problem, then you need to get an OBD II scan tool, available from any auto parts store. This small, computerized device can read the trouble codes and reset the computer, thus turning off the Check Engine light.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Ignition key
  • OBD II scan tool
    • 1

Turn off the vehicle and remove the key. Remove the gas cap on your Corolla. Wait 60 seconds and then put it back in place and tighten it.

    • 2

Put the key into the ignition and start the engine. If the check engine light has shut off, you're finished. If not, proceed to Step 3.

    • 3

Turn the vehicle off. Plug the OBD II scan tool into the Data Link Connector (DLC) on the driver's dash underneath the steering column. If there is an "On/Off" switch on the scan tool, turn it "On."

    • 4

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On/Off" position.

    • 5

Select "Codes" and then "Delete Codes," or a similar series of commands on the scan tool. When the task is complete, it will either return you to the main menu or display "OK." Each brand of scan tool is a bit different depending on the manufacturer.

    • 6

Unplug the scan tool from the port and start the engine. The check engine light should now be off.
