How to Connect a Subwoofer to a Toyota A51813

How to Connect a Subwoofer to a Toyota A51813

The A51813 is one of the factory decks installed in a Toyota. Like most factory decks, the A51813 does not have enough power to run a subwoofer alone and doesn't have outputs to connect an aftermarket power amplifier. To install a subwoofer to the A51813, you will need to purchase a Hi/Lo converter that lets you get the signal from the speaker wire. Decide where you want to mount the amp and subwoofer, then spend some time figuring out the best way to run the wires.

Moderate

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Power cable
  • Ground wire
  • RCA cable
  • Hi/Lo converter
  • Speaker wire
  • Solder gun
  • Electrical tape
    • 1

      Disconnect your Toyota's battery.

    • 2

Remove the A51813 from the dashboard. The process will be different depending on the car. Refer to the vehicle's owners manual for the proper stereo removal process.

    • 3

Locate the left and right speaker wires for the rear channel coming from the back of the deck. Using wire splitters, remove about an inch of the jacket on both sets of speaker wires, exposing the bare wire.

    • 4

Solder the right and left channel wires coming off your Hi/LO converter to the bare wires you just exposed coming from the deck. Make sure you get the positive wire on the converter connected to the positive speaker wire, and the negative wire connected to the other negative wire. Cover the connections with electrical tape.

Run the power cable from the amp to your car's battery. You might need to drill a hole in the firewall to feed the cable through. Connect one end of the cable to the amp and the other end to the positive post on the battery.

    • 6

Connect an RCA cable to the audio input on the amp. The red plug will go into the right channel and the white plug will go into the left channel. Run the other end of the RCA to the Hi/Lo converter. Plug the red plug into the red connection and the white plug into the white connection.

    • 7

Slide a ground wire into the "ground" connection on the amp and secure it. Find a nearby bolt connected to the car's chassis and loosen it. Take the other end of the ground wire and wrap it around the bolt, making sure you have a good connection with the bare wire and metal. Tighten down the bolt to hold the wire into place.

    • 8

Strip about an inch off the ends of the speaker wire. Place one end of the wire into the amplifier's speaker out. Depending on the amp and subwoofer configuration, you might have two sets of speaker wire to connect. Connect one set of wire into the right channel, and connect the other set of wire into the left channel. Run the other end of the speaker wire to the subwoofer and connect it to the speaker terminal on the back of the sub's box.

    • 9

Put the A51813 back into the dash.

    • 10

      Connect the car battery.
